Tucker and Dale Versus Evil was Amazing!
Our last film of the festival was the one we were most looking forward to the entire festival. Below is a short synopsis: “The hillbillies from the store captured Alison!”
Tucker and Dale, two hillbillies heading to their “fixer-upper” cabin for some relaxin’, discover they ain’t alone in them woods. They encounter an SUV full of vacationing college kids, and Dale unintentionally creeps them out. But later, as he and Tucker are fishing, Dale rescues one of them—the pretty blond Alison—after she falls into the lake. Assuming she’s been captured, the indomitably preppy college kids rally to find her.
A comically macabre battle between Izods and overalls, Eli Craig’s ingenious send-up of the horror genre recounts a simple misunderstanding gone grotesquely wrong. Our hillbilly psycho killers are actually sweet as pie; it’s the judgmental college kids who have “issues.”
This film really is going to be the next Shaun of the Dead as soon as people discover it. It uses horror conventions to essentially turn the hillbilly torture genre on it's head...AND THANK GOD! We've seen this one hundred times and it needs a refresher, something new. Thankfully Eli Craig has created a fresh and funny take on this sub-genre. This was also the film with the most recognizable cast. Tyler Labine, last seen in The now defunct comedy series Reaper and Alan Tudyk whom fanboys and girls now from the also now defunct sci-fi series Firefly star as Tucker and Dale and they are the characters to watch, riffing on character and bits remeniscant of classic comedy teams. The script is intelligent and well written and the entirety of the film is well acted.
We also got to do a Q and A with Craig after the screening and he was a wonderful speaker and clearly loves the genre and was really receptive to audience questions and feedback. Trust us, this is a movie to watch as soon as you have the opportunity-and just remember who told you to check it out... Check out the trailer below.
